On the production side, my only film experiences are with home
videos and make-shift narrative films with family and friends, starting from
when I was about nine years old. The most advanced cameras I had available to
me were a Flip camera and later an iPod Touch (now, an iPhone). I tried out
simple special effects using things like cuts and perspective, editing on Windows
MovieMaker and iMovie.
Through this course, I hope to become well rounded in the basics
of production and become confident in using more advanced tools and functioning
within a more organized, professional environment. I'm especially interested in
narrative film, but am also eager to learn from creating documentary and
experimental films. I want to become comfortable with the tools available to me,
so that I don’t just imagine shots, but know what to do to accomplish them.
In ten years, I hope to be directing commercial, narrative
cinema, with experience in both animation and live action. I have a little bit
of a dream to direct a film with Meander, developed by Disney Animation. I’m
really interested in its potential and the ability it may have to bring a
traditional 2D aesthetic to modern filmgoers. I’ve also played around with the
idea of being able to experiment with an animated or live action series on a
streaming service (such as Netflix), which I think may be capable of eventually
elevating the status of the television show.
I also hope to have, in ten years, a deeper understanding of
film, story, and art in general, having worked on my writing and drawing in
addition to film. I don’t believe an artist must be limited to one medium, and
I think that practicing writing, art, and the like will in turn improve my
filmmaking overall.
Something unique about me is that I used to figure skate, back before
high school. I did it for several years, and now wish I’d kept it up! Skating is still something that I love to do, and being out on the ice can be a peaceful spot for me.
